What I learned in 2011

December was a rather quiet month here and I could give you a list of excuses, but how about we don’t start the new year off with that and instead learn from it, so first:

  • I haven’t posted as often as I would have liked to have. What ever the reasons, the fact is that priorities lied elsewhere. But that’s rather easy for me to change in 2012, well, if I feel that it’s a priority at that moment haha – I’m not making any resolutions!
  • Groningen is a magical kingdom of princesses, princes, some toads, fairies, witches, poodles, all around awesome people and a few ompa lumpas (perfect for Queen’s Day, eh?). I will treasure the memories we made forever.
  • If a hostel gives you directions on how to find them, follow them religiously. Do NOT go to Google Maps and try to leg it, especially in Venice.
  • If you get locked into you hostel room within a week from getting locked into a toilet in another hostel and still manage to find the funny in it, it just might become an awesome day! After you’re let out of the room that is.
  • The significance of going to the army for some guys’ maturity level should not be underestimated. Learned this from living with a 23-year-old child.
  • A year without proper snow is too long and unacceptable.
  • How not to pack quite as much. I’m still not great at it, but I’ve definitely gotten better. Carrying everything on your back for a month will do that to a person.

And not:

  • How to filter the things I say.
  • How not to leave things to the last minute. My skills at procrastination are developing a bit more than they should.
  • How to get to the point. I can ramble on so long that I forget what I wanted to say in the first place
  • How to not stress over the little things.
  • How to not pick on my skin, especially while stressed. Realized this just now while picking on my face.

Music Monday: Erik Hassle

According to a magazine (and I can’t remember which one it was) this is my theme song for 2012 (and your’s as well if you’re a fellow Capricorn). The title ‘Bump In The Road’ sounds a bit ominous, but otherwise a nice enough song…

Ooooooh group work

As you may well be aware, I am not the biggest advocate for group work. Haha you’d think that as a masters student I’d be smart enough to study something else than marketing, which will eventually lead me into a lifetime of collaboration and groups. However, I am not. I am, in fact, even more stupid than that since I what I’m really interested in is advertising and that’s even more people. Ugh people, annoying annoying people.

oh btw the fact that there's snow in this is killing me...

But to be fair, they’re all not that bad. But one bad egg is enough to mess up the whole freaking cake. So, here’s a bit of back story in list form:

  • 4 members in a group
  • all from different countries
  • 3 girls
  • one Egyptian guy (who clearly never wanted to work with us)
  • one who doesn’t do his part (but was more than happy to let us do it)
  • 3 who call him out on it
  • assignment marks that do not get distributed equally
  • a huge fight in class (even the lecturer went all pale watching us)
  • damage to door of room 388 (as in a fist went through it)
  • official disciplinary action will ensue
  • 3 girls avoiding Egyptian guy (aka not going to PR class tomorrow morning)

oh Sheldon

So, all in all, another fun week with group work. This all kinda took away the excitement of having done really well on that assignment (second best grade in class – woop woop!). We’re getting two more group assignments back next week and have to go through the same again…hmmm what was the number of campus security again?

Off to press the magic button that will make everything OK.
